Comparison
SnapBio vs Khan Academy: which is better for biology?
Khan Academy offers free lessons, videos and practice in biology and other subjects. Its separate Khanmigo AI tutor offers guided help, including image uploads where available, with paid individual access. SnapBio is an iPhone app built only for biology. Here's how they compare.
We make SnapBio, so we're biased. We've tried to be fair: each entry says who it's best for, including when that isn't us. Facts about other apps come from their official websites and public listings and were checked October 2026.
Choose Khan Academy for free, structured biology lessons and course practice. Choose SnapBio for help with a particular biology question on iPhone and a notebook of worked answers. They can work together: learn the topic with Khan Academy, then use SnapBio when you get stuck applying it.

Where each one wins
Choose Khan Academy if…
- You want an organised biology course with videos and exercises, rather than help with just one question.
- You want free course practice without a daily allowance of photo solves.
- You study on a computer or Android phone as well as an iPhone.
- You want to work through AP Biology topics alongside other school subjects.
Choose SnapBio if…
- You want to photograph a particular biology question and start with its answer and numbered explanation.
- You want your solved questions saved in a biology notebook organised by topic.
- You want quizzes and flashcards generated from your own saved questions with SnapBio Pro.
- You prefer a focused iPhone workflow for questions from worksheets and textbooks.
Learning a topic or working through a question?
If meiosis is unfamiliar, start with a lesson and practice the ideas in sequence. Khan Academy is a good fit for that job. SnapBio starts with the question you bring: take or upload a photo, crop it, then read the answer and the steps.
If you use both, try the question yourself before checking an explanation. Then return to the lesson for any concept you still cannot explain. Neither an AI answer nor a completed exercise replaces understanding the biology.
Free courses and the separate Khanmigo subscription
Khan Academy's core course materials are free. Khanmigo is a separate AI tutoring product: its individual and family website plans list $4 a month or $44 a year before sales tax. Free teacher tools are a different offering from learner tutoring.
Khan Academy's published individual signup requirements include a US billing address and an adult subscriber; a parent or guardian can arrange access for a child. School access can differ. Check the linked signup information before paying. SnapBio offers three free biology solves per day, with regional Pro prices shown in the app.

About SnapBio
SnapBio is an iPhone app for biology homework. Snap or upload a photo of a question, crop it, and you get the answer first, then a short, numbered explanation of how to get there. Answers save to a notebook organised by topic.
It's free to download with three solves a day. SnapBio Pro adds unlimited solves, simpler explanations, and quizzes and flashcards made from your saved questions. Prices for your region are shown in the app.
Like every AI tool, SnapBio can make mistakes, so check the steps against your notes or textbook.
FAQ
Is Khan Academy free for biology?
Yes. Its core biology lessons and practice exercises are free. Khanmigo AI tutoring is separate from those free courses and has its own pricing and access requirements.
Can Khan Academy help with a photo of my homework?
Khanmigo supports image uploads in its Tutor Me activity on the web, subject to access requirements. Khan Academy says image input is not supported in its mobile app; use the mobile website instead. SnapBio offers a native iPhone photo-to-explanation flow.
Is SnapBio a replacement for Khan Academy's AP Biology course?
No. SnapBio helps explain individual questions; it is not a full AP Biology course. Use a structured course and your teacher's materials to cover the syllabus, and use question explanations to address gaps in your understanding.
Does Khan Academy have human tutors?
Its course lessons and Khanmigo AI tutoring are different from a live human tutor answering your worksheet. SnapBio also uses AI rather than human tutors. If you need personal teaching or feedback on an assignment, ask your teacher or a qualified tutor.
Can I use Khan Academy and SnapBio together?
Yes. Learn a concept through Khan Academy, attempt your class questions yourself, and use SnapBio to work through a biology question you cannot resolve. Follow your school's rules about AI on assessed work.
